Introduction
Both 広がる (hirogaru / to expand or spread) and 広まる (hiromaru / to become widespread) describe something reaching a wider area.
Because their meanings are so close, even intermediate Japanese learners often choose the wrong one.
The key difference is simple:
- 広がる focuses on an area, range, or scope becoming larger.
- 広まる focuses on information, customs, ideas, or methods becoming known or used by more people.
In this article, we will begin with common mistakes and learn how to choose the more natural word in each situation.
A Common Mistake
Japanese learners sometimes say:
留学して、私の考え方が広まりました。
After studying abroad, my way of thinking became widespread.
The grammar itself is not obviously incorrect, and the listener may understand the intended meaning. However, the sentence sounds unnatural.
The speaker probably wants to say that studying abroad expanded the range of their ideas and perspectives.
A more natural sentence is:
留学して、私の考え方が広がりました。
Studying abroad broadened my way of thinking.
Here, 広がる (hirogaru / to broaden or expand) is appropriate because the range of the speaker’s thinking has become wider.
By contrast, 広まる (hiromaru / to spread or become widespread) would suggest that the speaker’s ideas became known among many other people.
More Common Mistakes
Mistake 1
海外で生活して、私の視野が広まりました。
Living overseas made my perspective widespread.
The general meaning is understandable, but 視野が広まる sounds unnatural.
視野 (shiya / field of vision or perspective) refers to the range of things that a person can see, understand, or consider. When this range becomes larger, Japanese uses 広がる.
The natural sentence is:
海外で生活して、私の視野が広がりました。
Living overseas broadened my perspective.
Mistake 2
この新しい勉強法は、SNSを通して多くの学習者に広がりました。
This new study method spread to many learners through social media.
This sentence is not completely wrong. 広がりました can be used when the speaker is focusing on the geographical or social reach of the method.
However, when the intended meaning is that more learners learned about and began using the method, 広まりました is usually more natural.
この新しい勉強法は、SNSを通して多くの学習者に広まりました。
This new study method became widespread among learners through social media.
The difference is not simply a matter of correct versus incorrect grammar. It depends on what the speaker wants to emphasize.
Why Do These Sentences Sound Unnatural?
The main difference lies in what is becoming wider.
広がる: An Area or Range Becomes Larger
広がる (hirogaru) is used when an area, range, scope, possibility, or influence becomes larger.
It commonly appears with words such as:
- 範囲 (han’i / range)
- 景色 (keshiki / scenery)
- 面積 (menseki / area)
- 視野 (shiya / perspective)
- 選択肢 (sentakushi / options)
- 可能性 (kanōsei / possibilities)
- 人間関係 (ningen kankei / personal relationships)
- 被害 (higai / damage)
- 火 (hi / fire)
- 感染 (kansen / infection)
These things can spread across physical space or expand in an abstract sense.
広まる: More People Know or Use Something
広まる (hiromaru) is used when information, knowledge, customs, technology, ideas, or reputations become known, accepted, or used by more people.
It commonly appears with words such as:
- うわさ (uwasa / rumor)
- 情報 (jōhō / information)
- ニュース (nyūsu / news)
- 知識 (chishiki / knowledge)
- 習慣 (shūkan / custom or habit)
- 技術 (gijutsu / technology or technique)
- 制度 (seido / system)
- 考え方 (kangaekata / way of thinking)
- 名前 (namae / name)
- 評判 (hyōban / reputation)
In other words:
- 広がる focuses on the expansion of a range.
- 広まる focuses on transmission, adoption, or popularization.
Natural Corrections
Let us correct the earlier examples.
When Talking About Perspective
Unnatural:
海外で生活して、私の視野が広まりました。
Living overseas made my perspective widespread.
Natural:
海外で生活して、私の視野が広がりました。
Living overseas broadened my perspective.
視野 refers to the range of what a person can see or understand. Because that range has expanded, 広がる is the natural choice.
When Talking About a Study Method
Less natural in this context:
この新しい勉強法は、多くの学習者に広がりました。
This new study method spread to many learners.
More natural:
この新しい勉強法は、多くの学習者に広まりました。
This new study method became widespread among many learners.
The method itself is not physically becoming larger. The number of people who know and use it is increasing, so 広まる is appropriate.
However, 広がる can be natural when the focus is placed on the area or range of use.
この勉強法の利用が、海外にも広がっています。
The use of this study method is expanding overseas as well.
Compare the focus:
- 勉強法が広まる means that the method is becoming widely known or adopted.
- 勉強法の利用が広がる means that the range in which the method is used is expanding.
The Basic Difference Between 広がる and 広まる
広がる (Hirogaru)
広がる describes a range, space, area, possibility, or relationship becoming larger.
It can describe something physically visible:
窓の外に美しい海が広がっています。
A beautiful ocean stretches out beyond the window.
It can also describe something abstract:
新しい仕事を始めて、人間関係が広がりました。
Starting a new job expanded my network of personal relationships.
日本語が話せると、将来の可能性が広がります。
Being able to speak Japanese expands your future possibilities.
In each example, something becomes broader or larger than before.
広まる (Hiromaru)
広まる describes information, knowledge, customs, methods, or technology becoming known or used by more people.
そのうわさは、すぐに学校中に広まりました。
The rumor quickly spread throughout the school.
キャッシュレス決済が社会に広まっています。
Cashless payment is becoming widespread in society.
日本のアニメは世界中に広まりました。
Japanese anime has spread throughout the world.
In these examples, the important point is that the number of people who know, use, or accept something has increased.
A Simple Rule
- Use 広がる when the range itself becomes larger.
- Use 広まる when more people come to know or use something.
Some nouns, especially words related to information or culture, can be used with both verbs. In such cases, consider whether the sentence emphasizes reach or popularization.
Learn Through Examples
Example 1: Water
雨が降り続き、川の水が道路まで広がりました。
It continued to rain, and the river water spread onto the road.
The physical area covered by the water became larger, so 広がる is natural.
水が広まる is not normally used because water is not information or a custom transmitted from one person to another.
Example 2: Scenery
山の上から、町の景色が一面に広がっています。
From the top of the mountain, the town stretches out before us.
The scenery extends across a wide area, so 広がる is used.
Example 3: Your World
旅行をすると、自分の世界が広がります。
Traveling broadens your world.
The physical world does not become larger. Instead, the person’s experiences, knowledge, and perspectives expand.
This shows that 広がる can also describe an abstract range.
Example 4: Range of Activity
新しい道路ができて、行動範囲が広がりました。
The new road expanded the area in which we can travel.
行動範囲 means the range in which someone can move or act. Because that range has become larger, 広がる is the correct choice.
行動範囲が広まる is unnatural.
Example 5: News
そのニュースは、SNSを通して世界中に広まりました。
The news spread around the world through social media.
The number of people who know the news has increased, so 広まる is natural.
Example 6: Knowledge
健康に対する正しい知識が、少しずつ広まっています。
Accurate knowledge about health is gradually becoming more widespread.
More people are acquiring this knowledge, so 広まる is used.
However, 知識 can also be used with 広がる.
本を読むことで、歴史についての知識が広がりました。
Reading books broadened my knowledge of history.
Here, the range or content of one person’s knowledge has expanded.
Compare this with:
正しい歴史の知識が、多くの人に広まりました。
Accurate historical knowledge spread to many people.
In the first sentence, one person’s knowledge becomes broader. In the second, the number of people who possess the knowledge increases.
Example 7: A Custom
この習慣は、江戸時代に全国へ広まりました。
This custom spread throughout Japan during the Edo period.
More people learned about and adopted the custom, so 広まる is natural.
Example 8: Fire
火が風にあおられて、隣の建物まで広がりました。
Fanned by the wind, the fire spread to the neighboring building.
The area affected by the fire became larger, so 広がる is used.
広がる commonly appears with 火, 煙, 被害, and 感染.
Example 9: Infection
感染が短い期間で全国に広がりました。
The infection spread throughout the country in a short period.
The geographical area and number of people affected by the infection increased, so 広がる is natural.
病気が広まる can also be used, but 感染が広がる is a very common and natural combination.
Example 10: The Popularity of Japanese Food
日本食の人気が海外にも広がっています。
The popularity of Japanese food is expanding overseas.
The range of people and regions in which Japanese food is popular is becoming larger.
You can also say:
日本食が海外に広まっています。
Japanese food is becoming widespread overseas.
The second sentence focuses more on Japanese food becoming known and adopted in other countries.
The situation may be the same, but the speaker’s focus is different.
When Both Words Are Possible
Words such as うわさ, 情報, and 文化 can sometimes appear with both 広がる and 広まる.
うわさが広がる
会社がなくなるといううわさが、社内に広がりました。
A rumor that the company would close spread throughout the workplace.
This expression emphasizes the area or reach of the rumor. It creates an image of the rumor moving into more parts of the company.
うわさが広まる
会社がなくなるといううわさが、社員の間に広まりました。
A rumor that the company would close became widespread among the employees.
This expression emphasizes that more employees came to know about the rumor.
The overall meanings are very close, but you can use the following guide:
- Use 広がる when emphasizing how far something has reached.
- Use 広まる when emphasizing how many people have learned or adopted it.
How These Words Appear on the JLPT
In JLPT vocabulary and reading questions, 広がる and 広まる may appear together as competing choices.
Consider this sentence:
インターネットの発達によって、新しい情報が世界中に急速に( )。
With the development of the internet, new information rapidly ( ) throughout the world.
Possible choices:
- 広がった
- 広まった
Both may initially seem possible.
However, when the sentence focuses on more people learning the information, 広まった is the more appropriate answer.
Now consider:
新しい空港ができて、観光客の行動範囲が大きく( )。
A new airport was built, greatly ( ) the range in which tourists can travel.
Here, 広がった is the correct answer.
行動範囲 is not something that becomes known or accepted by more people. The range itself becomes larger.
When you are unsure, first check the noun that appears with the verb.
Words commonly used with 広がる include:
- 範囲
- 景色
- 面積
- 可能性
- 選択肢
- 被害
- 火
- 感染
Words commonly used with 広まる include:
- うわさ
- 情報
- ニュース
- 知識
- 習慣
- 制度
- 技術
- 名前
- 評判
However, do not judge from the noun alone.
As seen with 知識が広がる and 知識が広まる, both verbs may be grammatically possible.
Ask yourself:
- Is the content or range of the knowledge becoming broader? Use 広がる.
- Is the number of people who possess the knowledge increasing? Use 広まる.
When two choices have similar meanings, the key is to identify exactly what is increasing.
Summary
広がる and 広まる both describe something reaching a wider area, but they focus on different kinds of change.
- 広がる means that an area, range, possibility, or influence becomes larger.
- 広まる means that information, knowledge, customs, or methods become known or used by more people.
- Think of 広がる when the range itself expands.
- Think of 広まる when something is transmitted or popularized.
- When both are possible, decide whether the sentence emphasizes reach or adoption.
