届ける vs. 届く: How to Use These Common JLPT N3 Verbs Correctly

Introduction

If you are studying for the JLPT N3 or N2, you have probably seen both 届ける (todokeru / to deliver) and 届く (todoku / to arrive, to reach).

For example:

「荷物を届ける。」
I deliver a package.

「荷物が届く。」
A package arrives.

These two verbs describe closely related situations, so it is easy to confuse them.

However, there is one simple difference that makes them much easier to understand.

The key question is:

Is someone actively delivering something, or is something arriving at its destination?

Once you understand this distinction, choosing the correct verb becomes much easier.

The Quick Answer

「届ける」(todokeru) describes a person or organization causing something to reach another person or place.

「届く」(todoku) describes something reaching or arriving at its destination.

A simple way to remember them is:

  • 届ける (todokeru): someone delivers something
  • 届く (todoku): something arrives or reaches its destination

Compare:

「私は荷物を友達に届けました。」
I delivered the package to my friend.

「荷物が友達に届きました。」
The package arrived at my friend’s place.

With 届ける, we focus on the person performing the action.

With 届く, we focus on the thing that reaches its destination.

What Does 届ける Mean?

「届ける」(todokeru / to deliver, to bring, to send so that it reaches someone) is used when someone intentionally brings or sends something to another person or place.

A common sentence pattern is:

人が + 物を + 人・場所に + 届ける

Someone + delivers + something + to someone or somewhere

For example:

「私は先生に書類を届けました。」
I delivered the documents to my teacher.

The focus is on 私 (watashi / I), who performs the action of delivering the documents.

Notice that the object being delivered is usually marked with を.

「荷物を届ける」
to deliver a package

「手紙を届ける」
to deliver a letter

「商品を届ける」
to deliver a product

So when you see 「物を届ける」, think:

Someone actively makes the item reach its destination.

What Does 届く Mean?

「届く」(todoku / to arrive, to reach) describes something arriving at or reaching a person, place, or target.

A common pattern is:

物が + 人・場所に + 届く

Something + arrives/reaches + someone or somewhere

For example:

「荷物が家に届きました。」
The package arrived at my house.

Here, we are not focusing on who delivered it.

The important information is that the package reached the house.

The thing that arrives is usually marked with が.

「荷物が届く」
a package arrives

「メールが届く」
an email arrives

「手紙が届く」
a letter arrives

A useful mental image is:

届ける → someone makes it reach the destination

届く → it reaches the destination

When Is 届ける Used?

「届ける」 is common when a person or organization actively transports, sends, or communicates something.

Delivering physical objects

「宅配便の人が荷物を家まで届けてくれました。」
The delivery person brought the package all the way to my house.

The focus is on the person who delivered the package.

「駅で友達に忘れ物を届けました。」
I brought my friend the item they had forgotten at the station.

Here, the speaker actively takes the forgotten item to the friend.

Delivering information or feelings

届ける is not limited to physical objects.

It can also be used with information, voices, messages, and feelings.

「世界中の人に日本の文化を届けたいです。」
I want to bring Japanese culture to people around the world.

In this sentence, no physical object is being transported. The idea is to communicate or share Japanese culture with others.

Other common expressions include:

  • 声を届ける — to make one’s voice heard
  • 思いを届ける — to convey one’s feelings
  • ニュースを届ける — to bring or report the news

When Is 届く Used?

「届く」 is commonly used when the speaker focuses on whether something has successfully arrived or reached its target.

Packages and mail

「昨日、注文した本が届きました。」
The book I ordered arrived yesterday.

The focus is on the result: the book has arrived.

「先生からメールが届きました。」
I received an email from my teacher.

Literally, the email “reached” the speaker.

Voices and feelings

届く can also describe something reaching another person in a non-physical sense.

「この声は後ろの席まで届いていますか。」
Can you hear my voice in the back seats?

Literally, the speaker is asking whether the voice reaches the back of the room.

「彼の気持ちはきっと相手に届くと思います。」
I’m sure his feelings will reach the other person.

Here, 届く means that the feelings are successfully communicated.

Example Sentences

Examples with 届ける

「明日、この書類を先生に届けます。」
I will deliver these documents to my teacher tomorrow.

Someone intentionally takes the documents to the teacher.

「宅配便の人が荷物を家まで届けてくれました。」
The delivery person brought the package to my house.

The sentence focuses on the action performed by the delivery person.

「駅で友達に忘れ物を届けました。」
I brought my friend the item they had forgotten at the station.

The speaker actively brings the item to the friend.

「私たちは世界中の人に日本の文化を届けたいです。」
We want to share Japanese culture with people around the world.

Here, 届ける means communicating or bringing information and culture to other people.

Examples with 届く

「昨日、注文した本が届きました。」
The book I ordered arrived yesterday.

The focus is on the book reaching its destination.

「先生からメールが届きました。」
I received an email from my teacher.

The email reached the recipient.

「この声は後ろの席まで届いていますか。」
Can you hear my voice in the back seats?

届く expresses the idea of the voice reaching a certain distance.

「彼の気持ちはきっと相手に届くと思います。」
I think his feelings will surely reach the other person.

The meaning is that his feelings will be successfully communicated.

Common Mistakes

One of the easiest ways to distinguish these verbs is to pay attention to the particles を and が.

Mistake 1

Incorrect:

「昨日、荷物を届きました。」

This is unnatural because the package itself is the thing that arrived.

Use が with 届く.

Correct:

「昨日、荷物が届きました。」
The package arrived yesterday.

Mistake 2

Incorrect:

「私は友達に荷物が届けました。」

Here, 私 is performing the action, so 届ける is appropriate, and the item being delivered should normally be marked with を.

Correct:

「私は友達に荷物を届けました。」
I delivered the package to my friend.

Mistake 3: Do Not Judge by に Alone

Both verbs can appear with に.

「友達に荷物を届ける。」
I deliver a package to my friend.

「友達に荷物が届く。」
A package reaches my friend.

Therefore, seeing に does not tell you which verb to choose.

Instead, check what comes before the verb.

  • 物を → 届ける is likely
  • 物が → 届く is likely

More importantly, ask whether the sentence focuses on an action or an arrival.

How to Tell Them Apart on the JLPT

On JLPT vocabulary and reading questions, several clues can help you choose the correct answer.

Tip 1: Look for を

Consider:

「この荷物を田中さんに___ください。」

Please _____ this package to Mr. Tanaka.

The sentence contains 「荷物を」.

Someone needs to perform an action on the package, so the natural answer is:

「届けてください。」

「この荷物を田中さんに届けてください。」
Please deliver this package to Mr. Tanaka.

Tip 2: Look for が

Consider:

「注文した商品がまだ___いません。」

The product I ordered has not _____ yet.

Here, 商品 is marked with が.

The product itself has not arrived, so the answer is:

「届いていません。」

「注文した商品がまだ届いていません。」
The product I ordered has not arrived yet.

Tip 3: Ask “Action or Result?”

When particles alone are not enough, identify the viewpoint of the sentence.

Someone sends, brings, or delivers something:

→ 届ける

Something arrives or reaches someone:

→ 届く

This simple question is especially useful in longer JLPT reading passages.

What About 送る?

「送る」(okuru / to send) is another verb that learners often confuse with 届ける.

Compare:

「母にプレゼントを送りました。」
I sent my mother a present.

「母にプレゼントを届けました。」
I delivered a present to my mother.

送る focuses on sending or dispatching something toward another person.

届ける focuses more strongly on getting the item to its destination.

For example, you can send a package today even if it will not arrive until tomorrow.

This difference can sometimes be important in JLPT vocabulary questions.

Summary

The difference between 「届ける」 and 「届く」 becomes much easier once you pay attention to the direction of the action.

  • 届ける (todokeru): someone delivers or brings something to a destination
  • 届く (todoku): something arrives at or reaches a destination
  • 「荷物を届ける」: someone delivers a package
  • 「荷物が届く」: a package arrives
  • Focus on someone’s action → 届ける
  • Focus on arrival or result → 届く

Try remembering this pair together:

「私は荷物を届けます。」
I will deliver the package.

「荷物が家に届きます。」
The package will arrive at my house.
