利益・損失・費用: How to Use These Common JLPT N2 Words Correctly

Introduction

If you are studying for the JLPT N2, you have probably seen these three words:

  • 利益 (rieki / profit, benefit)
  • 損失 (sonshitsu / loss)
  • 費用 (hiyou / cost, expense)

At first, the difference may seem simple.

利益 is something positive.
損失 is something negative.
費用 is money you spend.

But in actual Japanese sentences, things are not always that easy.

Consider this sentence:

新しい機械を買うために、100万円の損失が必要です。
A loss of one million yen is necessary to buy the new machine.

You can probably understand what the speaker wants to say. One million yen will have to be paid.

However, 損失 (sonshitsu / loss) sounds unnatural here.

A native speaker would normally use 費用 (hiyou / cost or expense).

Why?

Because Japanese distinguishes between money spent for a purpose and money lost as a negative result.

That distinction is especially important in JLPT vocabulary and reading questions.

Let’s start with some common mistakes and see how to correct them.

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1

新しい工場を建てるためには、大きな損失がかかります。
Building a new factory involves a large loss.

The meaning is understandable, but the Japanese sounds unnatural.

The money needed to build a factory is not normally considered a 損失 (sonshitsu / loss).

A more natural sentence is:

新しい工場を建てるためには、多額の費用がかかります。
Building a new factory requires a large amount of money.

Here, 費用 (hiyou / cost, expense) is appropriate because the money is necessary in order to achieve a particular purpose.

Mistake 2

この商品を売った費用は、一つにつき500円です。
The expense from selling this product is 500 yen per item.

If the speaker means that selling one product generates 500 yen in profit, 費用 is not the right word.

費用 refers to money used or required to do something.

A natural sentence would be:

この商品を一つ売ると、500円の利益が出ます。
We make a profit of 500 yen each time we sell one of these products.

Here, 利益 (rieki / profit) describes the positive result of the sale.

Why Do These Sentences Sound Unnatural?

The main problem is that learners often focus only on whether money goes up or down.

But 利益, 損失, and 費用 describe money from different perspectives.

  • 利益 (rieki): a positive result or benefit
  • 損失 (sonshitsu): a negative result or something lost
  • 費用 (hiyou): money required or spent for a purpose

The distinction between 損失 and 費用 is especially important.

Both can involve money leaving a company or person, but the reason is different.

費用 is money used for a purpose

Suppose a company spends 500,000 yen on advertising.

That money is an advertising expense.

広告に50万円の費用をかけた。
The company spent 500,000 yen on advertising.

The company deliberately spent the money to achieve a goal.

損失 is something lost as a result

Now imagine that the advertising campaign completely fails and the company loses a large amount of money as a result.

Then we can talk about 損失.

広告戦略の失敗によって、大きな損失が出た。
The failed advertising strategy resulted in a major loss.

So even though both situations involve money decreasing, the viewpoint is different.

費用 is money spent for something.

損失 is a negative result.

Natural Ways to Say It

Let’s correct the earlier examples.

Use 費用 instead of 損失

Unnatural:

新しい工場を建てるためには、大きな損失がかかります。
Building a new factory involves a large loss.

Natural:

新しい工場を建てるためには、多額の費用がかかります。
Building a new factory requires considerable expense.

The money is required to build the factory, so 費用 is the natural choice.

Notice the common expression:

費用がかかる
to cost money / to require expenses

We do not normally say:

損失がかかる

Instead, 損失 often appears in expressions such as:

  • 損失が出る (sonshitsu ga deru / to incur a loss)
  • 損失が発生する (sonshitsu ga hassei suru / a loss occurs)
  • 損失を受ける (sonshitsu o ukeru / to suffer a loss)

Use 利益 instead of 費用

Unnatural:

この商品を売った費用は、一つにつき500円です。
The expense from selling this product is 500 yen per item.

Natural:

この商品を一つ売ると、500円の利益が出ます。
We make a profit of 500 yen on each item sold.

利益 is appropriate because it describes a positive financial result.

One important point is that 利益 does not simply mean all the money received from sales.

For example, imagine that a product sells for 1,000 yen but costs 800 yen to produce or purchase.

The full 1,000 yen is not the 利益.

In a simplified example, the profit would be 200 yen.

You do not need advanced accounting knowledge for the JLPT, but remembering that 利益 means the positive amount remaining after costs will help you understand many N2 reading passages.

The Basic Difference Between 利益, 損失, and 費用

利益 (Rieki / Profit, Benefit)

利益 describes something positive gained from business, an activity, or a situation.

For example:

今年は会社の利益が増えた。
The company’s profit increased this year.

Here, 利益 refers to the positive financial result of the company’s activities.

But 利益 is not limited to money.

For example:

両国の利益を考える。
We should consider the interests of both countries.

In this sentence, 利益 means something beneficial or advantageous to the two countries.

The core image of 利益 is therefore:

“something that produces a positive result.”

損失 (Sonshitsu / Loss)

損失 refers to something that has been lost or to a negative result caused by an accident, failure, business activity, or other event.

For example:

会社は大きな損失を出した。
The company suffered a major loss.

損失 can also refer to things other than money.

For example:

火事による損失
losses caused by a fire

データの損失
loss of data

The core image of 損失 is:

“something valuable has been lost.”

費用 (Hiyou / Cost, Expense)

費用 refers to money required or spent in order to do something.

For example:

留学には多くの費用がかかる。
Studying abroad costs a lot of money.

修理費用を会社が負担する。
The company will cover the repair costs.

Using 費用 does not mean that something bad happened.

Tuition, travel costs, research expenses, repair costs, and construction costs can all be described as 費用.

That is one of the most important differences between 費用 and 損失.

Learn the Difference Through Examples

Example 1: 利益

この会社は新商品の販売によって大きな利益を得た。
This company made a large profit from selling its new product.

The company achieved a positive financial result, so 利益 is natural.

A very useful combination to remember is:

利益を得る
to gain or make a profit

Example 2: 利益

原材料の価格が上がり、会社の利益が減った。
Raw material prices increased, reducing the company’s profit.

The positive amount remaining for the company became smaller, so 利益 is appropriate.

Common expressions include:

利益が増える
profit increases

利益が減る
profit decreases

Example 3: 損失

台風の影響で、農家は大きな損失を受けた。
Farmers suffered major losses because of the typhoon.

The farmers did not intentionally spend this money.

Something valuable was lost because of the typhoon, so 損失 is natural.

Example 4: 損失

システム障害によって会社に数千万円の損失が発生した。
The system failure caused losses of tens of millions of yen for the company.

The system problem produced a negative result, so 損失 is the correct word.

Example 5: 費用

海外留学には、授業料や生活費など多くの費用がかかる。
Studying abroad involves many expenses, including tuition and living costs.

This is money needed for the purpose of studying abroad.

Therefore, 費用 is natural.

Example 6: 費用

商品の開発費用をできるだけ減らしたい。
We want to reduce product development costs as much as possible.

The money is used to develop a product, so it is a 費用 rather than a 損失.

Example 7: 費用 and 利益

修理には費用がかかったが、長期的には会社にとって利益になった。
The repairs cost money, but in the long term they benefited the company.

This example clearly shows that 費用 does not necessarily mean something negative.

Money was spent first, but the result was ultimately beneficial.

Example 8: 利益 and 損失

投資には利益が出る可能性もあれば、損失が出る可能性もある。
An investment can result in either a profit or a loss.

Here, 利益 and 損失 form a natural contrast.

A positive result is 利益.

A negative result is 損失.

How These Words Can Trick You on the JLPT

On the JLPT, knowing a rough dictionary translation is often not enough.

You also need to pay attention to the surrounding words and the situation.

Consider this sentence:

新しい設備を導入するには、多額の( )がかかる。
Introducing new equipment requires a large amount of ( ).

Possible choices might include:

  • 利益
  • 損失
  • 費用

The correct answer is 費用.

Why?

The sentence is talking about money needed to introduce the equipment.

Also, the verb かかる is an important clue.

費用がかかる
to cost money

is a very common combination.

Now consider:

景気の悪化によって、会社は大きな( )を出した。
Because of the economic downturn, the company suffered a large ( ).

Here, 損失 is the natural answer.

A useful expression is:

損失を出す
to incur a loss

Now look at this example:

新商品の売れ行きがよく、予想以上の( )が出た。
The new product sold well and generated more ( ) than expected.

Here, 利益 is the best answer.

The important JLPT strategy is not to ask only:

“What does this word mean?”

Instead, ask:

  • Is this money needed for a purpose?
  • Is this a positive result?
  • Is this a negative result?
  • Which verb naturally goes with this noun?

Words with similar meanings are often used as distractors precisely because they seem possible at first glance.

The context tells you which one is truly natural.

Learn Common Word Combinations

For JLPT vocabulary, learning nouns together with the verbs that commonly accompany them is extremely effective.

With 利益:

  • 利益を得る — to gain a profit
  • 利益を上げる — to make a profit
  • 利益が出る — to generate a profit
  • 利益が増える — profit increases
  • 利益が減る — profit decreases

With 損失:

  • 損失を受ける — to suffer a loss
  • 損失を出す — to incur a loss
  • 損失が発生する — a loss occurs
  • 損失を補う — to compensate for a loss

With 費用:

  • 費用がかかる — to cost money
  • 費用を負担する — to bear the cost
  • 費用を払う — to pay the cost
  • 費用を抑える — to keep costs down
  • 費用を削減する — to reduce costs

Instead of memorizing each word in isolation, learn these combinations as complete patterns.

This will help you choose answers much faster in both vocabulary and reading questions.

Summary

利益, 損失, and 費用 are all related to money, but they describe very different situations.

  • 利益 (rieki): a positive result or benefit
  • 損失 (sonshitsu): a negative result or something lost
  • 費用 (hiyou): money required or spent for a purpose

The distinction between 損失 and 費用 is especially important.

A simple way to remember it is:

目的のために使うお金なら「費用」
If the money is used for a purpose, think 費用.

結果として失ったものなら「損失」
If something is lost as a negative result, think 損失.

結果としてプラスになったものなら「利益」
If the result is positive, think 利益.

JLPT N2 frequently tests words that look similar in meaning but cannot naturally be used in the same context.

The best way to master them is not simply to memorize translations. Practice choosing the most natural word inside complete sentences.

RJT (Rapid Japanese Training) is designed to help you do exactly that. By solving short JLPT-style questions repeatedly, you can train yourself to recognize natural Japanese rather than relying only on memorized definitions.

If you often think, “I know all the words, but I still choose the wrong answer,” try building the habit of judging Japanese through context and common word combinations.
