Introduction
If you are studying for the JLPT N2, you have probably seen the words 可能性, 必要性, and 重要性 many times.
All three end in 性 (せい / sei), and all three are abstract nouns often used in formal writing, news articles, essays, and JLPT reading passages.
Because they look similar, learners sometimes understand the general sentence but still choose the wrong word in a vocabulary question.
The key is to understand what kind of judgment each word expresses.
- 可能性 (かのうせい / kanōsei / possibility) asks: Could it happen?
- 必要性 (ひつようせい / hitsuyōsei / necessity) asks: Is it necessary?
- 重要性 (じゅうようせい / jūyōsei / importance) asks: Is it important?
Once you remember these three questions, the difference becomes much easier to see.
The Short Answer
可能性 (かのうせい / kanōsei / possibility) expresses the chance or possibility that something may happen.
必要性 (ひつようせい / hitsuyōsei / necessity) expresses the need to do something.
重要性 (じゅうようせい / jūyōsei / importance) expresses how important or valuable something is.
A simple way to remember them is:
- 可能性 → Could it happen?
- 必要性 → Does it need to be done?
- 重要性 → Is it important?
These words may appear in similar-looking sentences, but they focus on completely different ideas.
Understanding 可能性
可能性 means “possibility” or “likelihood”
可能性 is used when something has not been confirmed but could happen or could be true.
For example:
「台風が接近する可能性がある。」
There is a possibility that a typhoon will approach.
This does not mean that the typhoon will definitely approach. It means that this outcome is possible.
You will often see 可能性 with expressions such as:
- 可能性がある — there is a possibility
- 可能性が高い — the possibility is high / it is likely
- 可能性が低い — the possibility is low / it is unlikely
- 可能性を考える — consider the possibility
- 可能性を否定できない — cannot rule out the possibility
Possible combinations include:
- 成功する可能性 — possibility of succeeding
- 失敗する可能性 — possibility of failure
- 病気の可能性 — possibility of illness
- 誤解が生じる可能性 — possibility of a misunderstanding occurring
The important point is uncertainty.
可能性 tells us that something may happen, but it has not been established as a fact.
Understanding 必要性
必要性 means “necessity” or “the need for something”
必要性 is used when an action, measure, change, or support is considered necessary.
For example:
「制度を見直す必要性がある。」
There is a need to review the system.
The focus is not on whether the review will happen. The point is that the review is necessary.
Common combinations include:
- 改善の必要性 — need for improvement
- 対策の必要性 — need for countermeasures
- 支援の必要性 — need for support
- 見直しの必要性 — need for review
- 改革の必要性 — need for reform
必要性 often appears when a text first describes a problem and then explains what should be done about it.
This makes it especially common in JLPT reading passages about social issues, education, business, the environment, and public policy.
Understanding 重要性
重要性 means “importance” or “significance”
重要性 expresses the value, significance, or importance of something.
For example:
「教育の重要性を理解する。」
To understand the importance of education.
This sentence does not mean that education is merely necessary. It emphasizes that education has significant value.
Common combinations include:
- 健康管理の重要性 — importance of health management
- コミュニケーションの重要性 — importance of communication
- 環境保護の重要性 — importance of environmental protection
- チームワークの重要性 — importance of teamwork
- 基礎学習の重要性 — importance of learning the basics
重要性 often appears with verbs such as:
- 理解する — understand
- 認識する — recognize
- 強調する — emphasize
- 指摘する — point out
- 実感する — realize or feel strongly
- 再確認する — reaffirm
When the author is talking about the value or significance of something, 重要性 is usually the word to watch for.
How Their Usage Differs
When to use 可能性
可能性 is especially common in predictions, analysis, news reports, research, and explanations.
「今後、価格がさらに上昇する可能性があります。」
There is a possibility that prices will rise further in the future.
Here, the future is uncertain. The writer is making a prediction rather than stating a fact.
Another example:
「この変化には複数の原因が関係している可能性がある。」
It is possible that several causes are involved in this change.
The speaker does not claim to know the cause with certainty.
When to use 必要性
必要性 is common when discussing problems that require action.
「働き方を見直す必要性が高まっている。」
The need to reconsider working practices is increasing.
The focus is on the need for action.
Another example:
「高齢者への支援の必要性が指摘されている。」
The need for support for older people has been pointed out.
This does not simply say that support is valuable. It says that support is needed.
When to use 重要性
重要性 is used when explaining why something matters.
「外国語学習では、毎日続けることの重要性がよく指摘される。」
In foreign-language learning, the importance of continuing to study every day is often emphasized.
The sentence focuses on the value of daily practice.
Example Sentences with 可能性
Example 1
「午後から雨が降る可能性があります。」
There is a possibility of rain this afternoon.
The rain is not certain. The sentence only says that rain may occur.
Example 2
「このまま人口が減ると、学校が閉鎖される可能性もある。」
If the population continues to decline, there is also a possibility that schools will be closed.
This is a prediction about what could happen in the future.
Example 3
「入力した情報に間違いがある可能性があります。」
There is a possibility that the information you entered contains an error.
The speaker is avoiding a definite statement and saying that an error may exist.
Example 4
「十分に準備すれば、合格できる可能性は高くなる。」
If you prepare well, your chances of passing will increase.
Passing is not guaranteed, but the likelihood becomes greater.
Example Sentences with 必要性
Example 1
「古くなった制度を見直す必要性がある。」
There is a need to review the outdated system.
The sentence says that reviewing the system is necessary.
Example 2
「災害に備えて、避難方法を確認しておく必要性が高まっている。」
The need to check evacuation procedures in preparation for disasters is increasing.
The emphasis is on something that people should do.
Example 3
「子どもの安全を守るため、新しい対策の必要性が指摘されている。」
The need for new measures to protect children’s safety has been pointed out.
New measures are considered necessary to solve or prevent a problem.
Example 4
「社会の変化に合わせて、教育内容を改善する必要性がある。」
There is a need to improve educational content in response to changes in society.
The sentence presents improvement as something that should be done.
Example Sentences with 重要性
Example 1

The focus is on recognizing the value of sufficient sleep.
Example 2
「仕事では、相手の話をよく聞くことの重要性を忘れてはいけない。」
At work, we should not forget the importance of listening carefully to others.
Listening is presented as an important skill or behavior.
Example 3
「この経験を通して、チームワークの重要性を実感した。」
Through this experience, I realized the importance of teamwork.
The experience made the speaker understand how valuable teamwork is.
Example 4
「環境問題を考えるうえで、一人ひとりの行動の重要性は無視できない。」
When considering environmental problems, the importance of each individual’s actions cannot be ignored.
The sentence emphasizes the significance of individual action.
Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Confusing 可能性 with 必要性
Consider this sentence:
「事故を防ぐため、設備を点検する可能性がある。」
There is a possibility that the equipment will be inspected in order to prevent accidents.
This sentence can be grammatically possible, but its meaning is “the inspection may happen.”
If you want to say that inspection is required to prevent accidents, use:
「事故を防ぐため、設備を点検する必要性がある。」
There is a need to inspect the equipment in order to prevent accidents.
Remember:
- 可能性 = may happen
- 必要性 = needs to happen
Mistake 2: Thinking 必要性 and 重要性 are identical
Both of these phrases are natural:
「運動の必要性」
the necessity of exercise
「運動の重要性」
the importance of exercise
But they are not exactly the same.
「運動の必要性」 means that exercise is needed, for example for maintaining health.
「運動の重要性」 means that exercise is important or valuable.
A useful distinction is:
- 必要性 → something needs to be done
- 重要性 → something matters
Mistake 3: Replacing 可能性 with 重要性
Compare:
「成功の可能性が高い。」
The possibility of success is high.
「成功の重要性が高い。」
The importance of success is high.
Both sentences can be understood, but they communicate completely different ideas.
可能性 asks whether success is likely.
重要性 asks how important success is.
Do not choose based only on the noun before 性. Always check the meaning of the whole sentence.
How to Tell Them Apart on the JLPT
When 可能性, 必要性, and 重要性 appear together in the answer choices, do not focus only on their English translations.
Instead, identify what the sentence is trying to judge.
Choose 可能性 when the meaning is “might happen”
Look for ideas related to uncertainty or prediction, such as:
- 予想される — is expected
- 考えられる — can be considered
- おそれがある — there is a risk
- かもしれない — might
- 確実ではない — is not certain
- 高い・低い — high / low
Example:
「このまま気温が上昇すれば、農作物に影響が出る__がある。」
If temperatures continue to rise, there is a ___ that agricultural products will be affected.
The meaning is “the effect may occur,” so the answer is:
可能性
Choose 必要性 when the meaning is “needs to be done”
Look for contexts involving:
- 問題を解決する — solve a problem
- 改善する — improve
- 対策を行う — take measures
- 見直す — review
- 支援する — support
- 対応する — respond
Example:
「利用者が増えたため、サービス内容を改善する__が高まっている。」
Because the number of users has increased, the ___ to improve the service is growing.
The meaning is “improvement is becoming more necessary,” so the answer is:
必要性
Choose 重要性 when the meaning is “is important”
Look for verbs such as:
- 理解する — understand
- 認識する — recognize
- 強調する — emphasize
- 指摘する — point out
- 実感する — realize
- 再確認する — reaffirm
Example:
「海外で生活して初めて、言葉によるコミュニケーションの__を実感した。」
Only after living abroad did I realize the ___ of verbal communication.
The speaker realized how important communication is, so the answer is:
重要性
A Three-Question Shortcut
If you are unsure during the JLPT, turn the sentence into one of these three questions:
「起こるか?」
Could it happen?
→ 可能性
「する必要があるか?」
Does it need to be done?
→ 必要性
「大切か?」
Is it important?
→ 重要性
This is much more reliable than trying to memorize three abstract dictionary definitions separately.
Summary
可能性, 必要性, and 重要性 are common JLPT N2 abstract nouns, but each looks at a different aspect of the situation.
- 可能性 (kanōsei / possibility) → the chance that something may happen
- 必要性 (hitsuyōsei / necessity) → the need to do something
- 重要性 (jūyōsei / importance) → the value or significance of something
The easiest way to remember the difference is:
「起こるか・必要か・大切か」
Could it happen? Is it necessary? Is it important?
On the JLPT N2, simply knowing the dictionary meaning of a word is often not enough. You need to recognize which word fits naturally into an actual sentence.
RJT (Rapid Japanese Training) helps you build that skill by practicing JLPT-style vocabulary, grammar, and reading questions in context.
If you often think, “I know all the words, but I still choose the wrong answer,” practicing real questions is one of the best ways to turn passive knowledge into reliable test-taking ability.
