Introduction
必要がある (hitsuyō ga aru / there is a need to) and 必要になる (hitsuyō ni naru / become necessary) both relate to the idea that something is needed.
Because their meanings are so close, Japanese learners often wonder why one sentence uses 必要がある while another uses 必要になる.
For example:
勉強する必要がある。
You need to study.
勉強する必要になる。
It will become necessary to study.
At first glance, the difference may seem small. But these two expressions look at "necessity" from different angles.
The key question is:
Is the necessity already there, or does it arise because the situation changes?
Once you understand this distinction, choosing the right expression becomes much easier.
The Short Answer
必要がある (hitsuyō ga aru / there is a need to) describes a necessity that already exists under the current conditions.
必要になる (hitsuyō ni naru / become necessary) describes a change in which something becomes necessary because the circumstances change.
A simple way to remember the difference is:
- 必要がある → the need already exists
- 必要になる → the need appears as a result of change
This distinction is more important than whether the sentence refers to the present or the future.
Understanding 必要がある
The Basic Meaning
必要がある literally contains 必要 (hitsuyō / necessity, need) and ある (aru / to exist).
It therefore expresses the idea that "a necessity exists."
A very common pattern is:
Verb dictionary form + 必要がある
For example:
パスポートを更新する必要がある。
I need to renew my passport.
The speaker is saying that, based on the current situation, renewing the passport is necessary.
The important point is not that something is changing. The important point is that the necessity already exists.
A Useful English Equivalent
Depending on the context, 必要がある can often be translated as:
- need to
- have to
- it is necessary to
- there is a need to
However, 必要がある often sounds more neutral and explanatory than a direct command.
For example:
この問題について話し合う必要があります。
We need to discuss this issue.
This explains that discussion is necessary without directly ordering someone to do it.
Understanding 必要になる
The Basic Meaning
必要になる combines 必要 (hitsuyō / necessary) with なる (naru / to become).
The verb なる expresses a change of state.
Therefore, 必要になる means:
something that was not necessary before, or was not yet necessary, becomes necessary.
For example:
来月から身分証明書が必要になる。
An ID will become necessary starting next month.
The focus is on the change.
At present, an ID may not be required. From next month, however, the situation will change and it will be required.
Think of It as a Before-and-After Expression
必要になる often suggests two stages:
Before: not necessary, or not yet necessary
After: necessary
This is why it often appears with expressions that indicate a change in circumstances.
For example:
- 来月から — starting next month
- 今後 — from now on
- 〜すると — when / if something happens
- 〜場合 — in the case that
- 〜ようになると — once something starts to happen
- 〜が増えると — when something increases
When Is 必要がある Used?
必要がある is common when talking about obligations, requirements, judgments, rules, procedures, or advice.
Rules and Procedures
この書類を提出する必要があります。
You need to submit this document.
The requirement already exists.
Study and Personal Goals
JLPT N2に合格するには、語彙をもっと増やす必要がある。
To pass JLPT N2, you need to increase your vocabulary.
The speaker judges that more vocabulary is necessary to achieve the goal.

この問題について、もう一度話し合う必要があります。
We need to discuss this issue again.
Based on the current situation, another discussion is considered necessary.
Preparation
海外旅行の前に、パスポートの有効期限を確認する必要がある。
Before traveling abroad, you need to check the expiration date of your passport.
The necessity exists because of the planned trip.
When Is 必要になる Used?
必要になる is especially common when circumstances, systems, schedules, environments, or conditions change.
A Change in Rules
来月から、この建物に入るときは身分証明書が必要になります。
Starting next month, you will need an ID to enter this building.
The rule changes next month, creating a new requirement.
A Change in Work Conditions
仕事が忙しくなると、スケジュール管理が必要になります。
When work gets busy, schedule management becomes necessary.
The need arises because the workload changes.
A Change in Living Environment
海外で長期間生活する場合は、現地の銀行口座が必要になることがあります。
If you live abroad for a long period, you may need a local bank account.
Living abroad creates a situation in which a local bank account may become necessary.
Organizational Growth
会社の規模が大きくなれば、より厳しい情報管理が必要になるでしょう。
As a company grows, stricter information management will probably become necessary.
The necessity appears as a result of the company becoming larger.
Example Sentences with 必要がある
Example 1
明日までに、このレポートを提出する必要があります。
You need to submit this report by tomorrow.

This is an important point: a sentence can refer to the future and still use 必要がある.
Example 2
JLPT N2に合格するには、語彙をもっと増やす必要がある。
To pass JLPT N2, you need to increase your vocabulary.
The speaker sees increasing vocabulary as a current requirement for reaching the goal.

Example Sentences with 必要になる
Example 1
来月から、この建物に入るときは身分証明書が必要になります。
Starting next month, you will need an ID to enter this building.
There is a change between the current rule and the rule starting next month.
Example 2
仕事が忙しくなると、スケジュール管理が必要になります。
When work gets busy, schedule management becomes necessary.

Example 3
海外で長期間生活する場合は、現地の銀行口座が必要になることがあります。
If you live abroad for a long period, you may need a local bank account.
The new living situation can create a new necessity.
Example 4
会社の規模が大きくなれば、より厳しい情報管理が必要になるでしょう。
As the company grows, stricter information management will probably become necessary.
The sentence describes how a future change creates a new requirement.
A Common Mistake: Future Does Not Automatically Mean 必要になる
One of the most important points for learners is that 必要になる does not simply mean "will need."
Consider this sentence:
明日、病院へ行く必要があります。
I need to go to the hospital tomorrow.
The action will happen tomorrow, but the necessity already exists now.
That is why 必要がある is natural.
The real contrast is not:
present vs future
It is:
existing necessity vs necessity created by change
This distinction is especially useful when answering JLPT questions.
Why Some Sentences with 必要になる Sound Unnatural
Consider:
私は毎日薬を飲む必要になる。
I will become required to take medicine every day.
Without additional context, this sounds unnatural because there is no clear change that creates the necessity.
If the necessity already exists, say:
私は毎日薬を飲む必要がある。
I need to take medicine every day.
If you want to describe a change, give the reason or situation that creates the need:
治療を始めると、毎日薬を飲む必要になる。
Once the treatment begins, it will become necessary to take medicine every day.
In natural Japanese, another expression is also common:
毎日薬を飲む必要が出てくる。
The need to take medicine every day will arise.
必要が出てくる (hitsuyō ga dete kuru / the need arises) strongly emphasizes that a new necessity appears.
How to Tell Them Apart on the JLPT
When you see 必要がある and 必要になる as possible answers, do not look only at the word immediately before them.
Look at the entire situation.
Choose 必要がある When the Sentence Describes an Existing Requirement
Typical contexts include:
- rules
- obligations
- procedures
- advice
- conditions for achieving a goal
- a judgment about what should be done
For example:
申し込みをする前に、利用規約を確認する__。
Before applying, you _____ check the terms of use.
The sentence is simply saying that checking the terms is necessary.
The natural choice is:
必要がある
There is a need to / need to
Think About 必要になる When the Context Contains a Change
Look for clues such as:
- これから — from now on
- 今後 — in the future
- 来月から — starting next month
- 〜すると — when / if
- 〜ようになると — once something begins to
- 〜場合 — if / in the case of
- 増える — increase
- 大きくなる — become larger
- 変わる — change
For example:
社員がさらに増えれば、もっと広いオフィスが__。
If the number of employees increases further, a larger office will _____.
The increase in employees creates a new need.
Therefore:
必要になる
become necessary
is natural.
A Simple Memory Trick
When you are unsure, ask yourself two questions.
First:
Is it already necessary?
If yes, 必要がある is probably the better choice.
Second:
Does something happen first, causing the need to appear?
If yes, 必要になる is probably the better choice.
You can imagine the difference like this:
必要がある
→ Need already exists
状況が変わる
→ Situation changes
必要になる
→ A new need appears
Summary
必要がある and 必要になる both talk about necessity, but their focus is different.
- 必要がある describes a necessity that already exists under the current conditions.
- 必要になる describes a situation in which something becomes necessary because circumstances change.
When you are unsure, do not ask only, "Is this sentence about the future?"
Instead, ask:
Is the need already there?
Or:
Does a change create the need?
This way of thinking will also help you understand other Japanese expressions involving change, such as 〜ようになる and 〜ことになる.
At the JLPT N3–N2 level, knowing the dictionary meaning of a word is not enough. You also need to recognize which expression naturally fits the context.
RJT (Rapid Japanese Training) helps you build this skill through multiple-choice practice with vocabulary, grammar, reading, and other Japanese questions. By repeatedly choosing between similar expressions in real contexts, you can develop the ability to recognize natural Japanese more quickly and confidently.
