Introduction
If you are studying for the JLPT N3 or N2, you have probably seen both 集める (atsumeru / to collect, gather) and 集まる (atsumaru / to gather, come together).
At first, they seem almost identical.
For example:
「人を集める。」
To gather people.
「人が集まる。」
People gather.
Both sentences involve people coming together in one place, but the viewpoint is different.
The key question is simple:
Is someone actively gathering people or things, or are the people or things themselves coming together?
Once you understand this difference, choosing between 集める and 集まる becomes much easier.
The Short Answer
「集める (atsumeru / to collect, gather)」 means that someone actively brings people or things together.
「集まる (atsumaru / to gather, come together)」 means that people or things come together or accumulate.
A simple way to remember the difference is:
- 何かを集める (nanika o atsumeru): someone gathers something
- 何かが集まる (nanika ga atsumaru): something gathers or comes together
Compare these two sentences:
「先生が学生を集めました。」
The teacher gathered the students.
Here, the teacher actively caused the students to come together.
「教室に学生が集まりました。」
The students gathered in the classroom.
Here, the focus is on the students coming together.
This difference in viewpoint is the most important point to remember.
Understanding 集める
集める Means Someone Actively Gathers Something
「集める (atsumeru / to collect, gather)」 is used when a person intentionally collects, gathers, or brings something together.
A common pattern is:
「人が + ものを + 集める」
Someone gathers something.
For example:
「資料を集める。」
To collect materials.
This means that someone searches for, obtains, or organizes the materials.
「お金を集める。」
To collect money.
This could mean collecting donations, fees, or money from a group of people.
The important idea is that someone is actively doing something.
You will often see expressions such as:
- 情報を集める (jōhō o atsumeru / collect information)
- お金を集める (okane o atsumeru / collect money)
- 切手を集める (kitte o atsumeru / collect stamps)
- 資料を集める (shiryō o atsumeru / collect materials)
- 人を集める (hito o atsumeru / gather people)
- 注目を集める (chūmoku o atsumeru / attract attention)
Notice that 集める is not limited to physical objects.
You can also collect information, money, attention, opinions, and other abstract things.
Understanding 集まる
集まる Means People or Things Come Together
「集まる (atsumaru / to gather, come together)」 describes people or things coming together, accumulating, or becoming concentrated in one place.
A common pattern is:
「人・ものが + 場所に + 集まる」
People or things gather somewhere.
For example:
「駅前に人が集まっています。」
People are gathering in front of the station.
The important point is not who caused them to gather. The focus is simply on the fact that the people have come together.
You will often see:
- 人が集まる (hito ga atsumaru / people gather)
- お金が集まる (okane ga atsumaru / money is collected)
- 情報が集まる (jōhō ga atsumaru / information accumulates)
- 注目が集まる (chūmoku ga atsumaru / attention gathers)
- 意見が集まる (iken ga atsumaru / opinions come in)
So while 集める focuses more on someone's action, 集まる focuses more on the change or resulting situation.
When Are 集める and 集まる Used?
Both verbs are common in everyday conversation, school, work, news articles, and JLPT reading passages.
Everyday Conversation
「集める」 is often used when talking about hobbies or preparation.
「子どものころ、切手を集めていました。」
When I was a child, I used to collect stamps.
Someone intentionally collected the stamps, so 集める is appropriate.
「旅行の前に情報を集めています。」
I am collecting information before my trip.
The speaker is actively looking for information.
「集まる」 is often used when talking about people coming together.
「今日は友達が家に集まります。」
My friends are gathering at my house today.
The friends themselves are coming together.
「駅の前にたくさんの人が集まっていました。」
A lot of people had gathered in front of the station.
The sentence describes the situation rather than someone's action of gathering them.
School and Business
Both verbs appear frequently in school and workplace situations.
「アンケートの回答を集めます。」
We will collect the survey responses.
Someone is actively collecting the responses.
「会議のために社員を集めました。」
We gathered the employees for a meeting.
Someone arranged for the employees to come together.
Compare this with:
「会議室に社員が集まりました。」
The employees gathered in the meeting room.
Here, the employees are the people who gathered.
「たくさんの意見が集まりました。」
We received a lot of opinions.
Literally, many opinions gathered or came in.
The focus is on the result.
News and JLPT Reading Passages
You may also see expressions such as:
「新しい商品が若者の注目を集めています。」
The new product is attracting the attention of young people.
Here, 注目 (chūmoku / attention) is what the product attracts, so we use 注目を集める.
Compare:
「この問題に世界中から注目が集まっています。」
This issue is attracting attention from around the world.
Here, 注目 is the subject of 集まる.
Both expressions are natural, but the grammatical viewpoint is different.
This distinction often appears in JLPT N3 and N2 reading and vocabulary questions.
Check Your Understanding with Example Sentences
Example 1
「旅行に行く前に、インターネットで情報を集めました。」
Before going on my trip, I collected information on the internet.
The person intentionally searched for and collected information, so 集める is used.
Example 2
「このサイトには、日本語学習に役立つ情報がたくさん集まっています。」
A lot of useful information for learning Japanese can be found on this website.
The information has accumulated in one place, so 集まる is natural.
Example 3
「イベントのために、スタッフを20人集めました。」
We gathered 20 staff members for the event.
Someone actively arranged for the staff members to participate, so スタッフを集める is used.
Example 4
「イベントが始まる前に、会場にたくさんの人が集まりました。」
A lot of people gathered at the venue before the event started.
The people themselves came to the venue, so 人が集まる is appropriate.
Example 5
「学校では、災害で困っている人のために寄付金を集めています。」
The school is collecting donations for people affected by the disaster.
The school is actively collecting money, so 寄付金を集める is used.
Example 6
「一週間で100万円以上の寄付金が集まりました。」
More than one million yen in donations was collected in one week.
This sentence focuses on the result: the donation money accumulated.
Therefore, 寄付金が集まる is natural.
Example 7
「その新しいサービスは、多くの若者の注目を集めています。」
The new service is attracting a lot of attention from young people.
「注目を集める (chūmoku o atsumeru / attract attention)」 is a very common expression in news reports and business writing.
Example 8
「発表された新しい技術に、世界中から注目が集まっています。」
The newly announced technology is receiving attention from around the world.
Here, 注目 is treated as something that is gathering around the new technology, so 注目が集まる is used.
Common Mistakes
One of the most common mistakes is mixing up the particles を and が.
For example:
「駅前にたくさんの人を集まりました。」
This is incorrect.
The natural sentence is:
「駅前にたくさんの人が集まりました。」
A lot of people gathered in front of the station.
Because the people themselves gathered, 人 takes が.
Another incorrect sentence is:
「先生が学生が集めました。」
The natural version is:
「先生が学生を集めました。」
The teacher gathered the students.
The teacher caused the students to come together, so 学生 takes を.
However, do not rely only on memorizing を with 集める and が with 集まる.
The real question is:
Who or what is doing the action?
Compare:
「先生が学生を集めた。」
The teacher gathered the students.
「学生が集まった。」
The students gathered.
Both sentences describe a similar event, but from different viewpoints.
How to Tell the Difference on the JLPT
When both 集める and 集まる appear in the answer choices, check the structure and meaning of the sentence.
Tip 1: If You See を, Consider 集める
For example:
「研究のために必要な資料を( )。」
I will ___ the materials necessary for my research.
The object is 資料を.
Someone is intentionally collecting the materials.
Therefore:
「資料を集める。」
Collect the materials.
is the natural choice.
Tip 2: If Something Is Marked with が, Consider 集まる
For example:
「駅前にたくさんの人が( )いる。」
A lot of people are ___ in front of the station.
人 is the subject.
Therefore:
「人が集まっている。」
People are gathering.
is natural.
Tip 3: Ask Whether the Sentence Describes an Action or a Result
Compare:
「会社は利用者から意見を集めた。」
The company collected opinions from users.
The company actively collected the opinions.
Now compare:
「利用者から多くの意見が集まった。」
Many opinions were received from users.
The focus is on the result: many opinions came in.
JLPT questions often test this difference in viewpoint.
Tip 4: Do Not Look at the Particle Alone
Both of these expressions are correct:
「必要なデータを集める。」
To collect the necessary data.
「必要なデータが集まる。」
The necessary data is gathered or becomes available.
So you must understand the whole sentence.
For example:
「研究者がいろいろな場所を調査して、必要なデータを集めた。」
The researcher investigated various locations and collected the necessary data.
The researcher actively performed the action, so 集めた is natural.
Compare:
「多くの人にアンケートをお願いした結果、必要なデータが集まった。」
As a result of asking many people to complete a survey, the necessary data was collected.
Here, the focus is on the result, so 集まった is natural.
When you are unsure, ask yourself:
Is someone actively gathering something?
Or are people or things coming together or accumulating?
That question will often lead you to the correct JLPT answer.
Summary
The difference between 集める and 集まる can be summarized very simply:
- 集める (atsumeru): someone gathers or collects people or things
- 集まる (atsumaru): people or things gather, come together, or accumulate
- 人を集める means “to gather people”
- 人が集まる means “people gather”
- On the JLPT, check who is performing the action and whether the sentence focuses on an action or a result
Once you understand the viewpoint behind these two verbs, they become much easier to distinguish.
The same is true for many other pairs of Japanese verbs. Knowing the dictionary definition is only the first step. To succeed on the JLPT, you also need to recognize the correct expression quickly inside a real sentence.
RJT (Rapid Japanese Training) helps you build that skill through multiple-choice practice designed for Japanese learners.
Instead of simply memorizing vocabulary, you can practice choosing the right Japanese expression in context and develop the ability to recognize natural Japanese quickly.
If you want to become more confident with JLPT vocabulary and easily confused Japanese expressions, practice with RJT (Rapid Japanese Training).
