関係・関連・連携: How to Use These Common JLPT N2 Words Naturally

Introduction

If you are studying for JLPT N2, you have probably seen the words 関係 (Kankei / relationship, connection), 関連 (Kanren / relation, relevance), and 連携 (Renkei / cooperation, coordination).

All three words share one basic idea: there is some kind of “connection.”

That is exactly why they are so easy to confuse.

For example, a learner might write:

この会社は海外の大学と関連して、新しい研究を進めています。

This company is “related” with an overseas university and is conducting new research.

You can probably understand what the speaker wants to say. Grammatically, the sentence may even look reasonable at first.

However, if the company and university are actively working together, 関連 (Kanren / relation) is not the most natural choice.

In this situation, 連携 (Renkei / cooperation, coordination) is better.

この会社は海外の大学と連携して、新しい研究を進めています。

This company is working in cooperation with an overseas university on new research.

The key is not simply remembering that all three words mean something like “connection.”

You need to ask what kind of connection is being described.

  • 関係 (Kankei / relationship, connection): a broad connection between people or things
  • 関連 (Kanren / relation, relevance): a connection in content, information, topic, cause, or context
  • 連携 (Renkei / cooperation, coordination): people or organizations working together

Let’s start with the kinds of mistakes Japanese learners often make.

A Common Mistake

Consider this sentence:

この病気は生活習慣と連携していると言われています。

It is said that this disease is “cooperating” with lifestyle habits.

The intended meaning is understandable, but the Japanese sounds unnatural.

Why?

Because 連携する (Renkei suru / to cooperate, coordinate) is normally used when people, organizations, departments, institutions, or similar groups actively work together.

A disease and lifestyle habits do not “cooperate” with each other.

More natural sentences would be:

この病気は生活習慣と関係していると言われています。

It is said that this disease is related to lifestyle habits.

or:

この病気は生活習慣と関連していると言われています。

It is said that this disease is associated with lifestyle habits.

Now look at another common mistake:

市と大学が関連して、地域の観光事業を進めています。

The city and the university are “related” and are promoting a local tourism project.

Again, the general meaning is understandable.

However, if the city and the university are actively working together on the project, 連携して is much more natural.

市と大学が連携して、地域の観光事業を進めています。

The city and the university are working together to promote a local tourism project.

These mistakes happen because learners focus on the shared idea of “connection” without looking closely at the type of connection.

Why Do These Sentences Sound Unnatural?

The biggest reason 関係, 関連, and 連携 are confusing is that all three can describe some form of connection.

However, the nature of that connection is different.

関係 (Kankei / Relationship, Connection): The Broadest Word

関係 (Kankei) is the most general of the three.

It can describe a relationship between people:

彼とは仕事上の関係があります。

I have a professional relationship with him.

It can also describe a connection between things:

睡眠不足は集中力の低下と関係しています。

Lack of sleep is related to decreased concentration.

It can even mean that something concerns or involves you:

私には関係ありません。

It has nothing to do with me.

So, 関係 is a broad word that can cover human relationships, causes, effects, circumstances, and many other kinds of connections.

関連 (Kanren / Relation, Relevance): A Connection in Content or Context

関連 (Kanren) is often used when two things are connected through their content, topic, information, cause, or context.

For example:

この二つの事件は関連している可能性があります。

These two incidents may be related.

The sentence does not mean that the two incidents are “cooperating.”

It means that there may be some factual or contextual connection between them.

関連 is also slightly more formal and objective than 関係, so it appears frequently in news reports, academic writing, business documents, and explanatory texts.

Common expressions include:

  • 関連情報 (Kanren jōhō / related information)
  • 関連資料 (Kanren shiryō / related materials)
  • 関連商品 (Kanren shōhin / related products)
  • 関連記事 (Kanren kiji / related articles)

連携 (Renkei / Cooperation, Coordination): Working Together

連携 (Renkei) is different from the other two because it does not simply describe a connection.

It describes people or organizations cooperating and acting together toward a shared goal.

For example:

学校と地域が連携して、子どもたちを支援しています。

The school and the local community are working together to support children.

The school and the community are not merely “connected.”

They are actively cooperating.

That sense of “working together” is the key to understanding 連携.

How to Correct the Mistakes

Let’s return to the earlier examples.

Mistake 1

この病気は生活習慣と連携していると言われています。

It is said that this disease is “cooperating” with lifestyle habits.

A natural correction is:

この病気は生活習慣と関係していると言われています。

It is said that this disease is related to lifestyle habits.

Another possible sentence is:

この病気は生活習慣と関連していると言われています。

It is said that this disease is associated with lifestyle habits.

The disease and lifestyle habits are connected, but they are not actively cooperating. Therefore, 関係 or 関連 is appropriate.

In objective or medical explanations, 関連 may sound particularly natural.

Mistake 2

市と大学が関連して、地域の観光事業を進めています。

The city and the university are “related” and are promoting a local tourism project.

A more natural sentence is:

市と大学が連携して、地域の観光事業を進めています。

The city and the university are working together to promote a local tourism project.

Here, both organizations are cooperating toward a common goal.

That is exactly the kind of situation in which 連携 is used.

The Basic Difference Between 関係, 関連, and 連携

関係 (Kankei / Relationship, Connection)

Use 関係 when you want to express a broad connection between people or things.

A useful mental image is:

“Something connects A and B.”

It is the most flexible of the three words.

関連 (Kanren / Relation, Relevance)

Use 関連 when things are connected through information, content, topic, cause, events, or context.

A useful mental image is:

“The content of A is connected with B.”

It often sounds more objective and formal than 関係.

連携 (Renkei / Cooperation, Coordination)

Use 連携 when people, groups, institutions, companies, or organizations cooperate and act together.

A useful mental image is:

“A and B work together toward a goal.”

So, a simple way to remember the difference is:

  • 関係: a general connection
  • 関連: a connection in content or context
  • 連携: cooperation and coordinated action

Learn the Difference Through Examples

Example 1: 関係

運動不足と肥満には深い関係があります。

There is a strong relationship between lack of exercise and obesity.

Here, 関係 is natural because the sentence describes a broad connection between two things.

Example 2: 関係

彼とは仕事の関係で知り合いました。

I met him through work.

This sentence describes a human connection established through work.

関連 and 連携 would not naturally express this meaning.

Example 3: 関連

このニュースに関連する情報を集めています。

I am collecting information related to this news story.

The information is connected to the news in terms of content or topic, so 関連する is natural.

This pattern appears very frequently in JLPT-level reading passages.

Example 4: 関連

環境問題に関連した研究が世界各国で行われています。

Research related to environmental issues is being conducted around the world.

The research and environmental issues are connected by subject matter.

This is a typical use of 関連 in academic or objective writing.

Example 5: 関連

警察は二つの事件が関連しているとみて調べています。

Police are investigating the two incidents on the assumption that they may be connected.

This kind of expression is especially common in news reports.

The point is that there may be a factual connection between the two incidents.

Example 6: 連携

病院と地域の福祉施設が連携して、高齢者を支援しています。

The hospital and local welfare facilities are working together to support elderly people.

The organizations are actively cooperating, so 連携 is the natural choice.

Example 7: 連携

大学と企業が連携して、新しい技術を開発しました。

A university and a company collaborated to develop new technology.

The university and company are working together toward a common goal.

This is a classic example of 連携.

Example 8: 連携

部署同士の連携がうまくいっていない。

Coordination between the departments is not going well.

This does not simply mean that the departments have a bad “relationship.”

It suggests that information sharing, cooperation, or coordination between them is not functioning properly.

That practical sense of working together is an important nuance of 連携.

What Is the Difference Between 関係 and 関連?

These two words can sometimes appear in very similar sentences.

For example:

喫煙は肺の病気と関係している。

Smoking is related to lung disease.

喫煙は肺の病気と関連している。

Smoking is associated with lung disease.

Both sentences are natural.

However, there is a slight difference in nuance.

関係している gives a general statement that two things are connected.

関連している often sounds more objective or analytical, as if the connection is being discussed on the basis of research, evidence, data, or factual information.

For example:

研究の結果、睡眠時間と健康状態には関連があることが分かった。

The study found an association between sleep duration and health status.

関連 sounds particularly natural in this type of objective statement.

This does not mean that 関係 would always be grammatically wrong.

That is exactly what makes these words difficult on the JLPT: more than one option may seem possible, but one fits the context better.

What Is the Difference Between 関係 and 連携?

Compare these sentences:

A社とB社には関係があります。

Company A and Company B have some kind of relationship.

A社とB社は連携しています。

Company A and Company B are working together.

The first sentence only tells us that some connection exists between the companies.

They might have a business relationship, financial relationship, or another type of connection.

The second sentence tells us something more specific: the companies are cooperating.

An important point to remember is:

“Having a relationship” does not necessarily mean “working together.”

That distinction separates 関係 from 連携.

What Is the Difference Between 関連 and 連携?

These words may be especially confusing because even their kanji look somewhat similar.

関連 describes a connection between things:

この制度に関連する法律を調べる。

Investigate laws related to this system.

連携 describes cooperation between people or organizations:

国と自治体が連携して制度を運営する。

The national and local governments work together to administer the system.

If you are unsure, ask yourself one question:

“Are these people or organizations actually working together?”

If yes, 連携 is probably the better choice.

If the sentence only describes a connection in topic, information, content, or context, 関連 is more likely.

How JLPT Questions Try to Trick You

JLPT vocabulary and reading questions often include choices that have similar dictionary meanings.

Consider this example:

地域の病院と福祉施設が__して、高齢者の生活を支えている。

Local hospitals and welfare facilities are __ to support the lives of elderly people.

Possible choices might include:

  • 関係
  • 関連
  • 連携

The best answer is 連携.

Hospitals and welfare facilities certainly have a “relationship,” but that is not the key point of the sentence.

They are working together to support elderly people.

That context makes 連携 the most natural answer.

Now consider:

この問題に__する資料を図書館で探した。

I looked in the library for materials __ to this issue.

関連する is the natural choice because the materials are connected to the issue in terms of content.

And:

彼とは大学時代から長い__がある。

I have had a long __ with him since our university days.

Here, 関係 is natural because the sentence describes a relationship between people.

When answering JLPT questions, do not look only at the individual word.

Ask:

  • What things are being connected?
  • What kind of connection is it?
  • Are people or organizations actively working together?
  • Is the sentence talking about information, a topic, or factual content?

These clues can help you eliminate tempting but slightly unnatural choices.

A Simple Way to Choose the Right Word

If you are unsure which word to use, try this order.

First, ask:

“Are people or organizations cooperating?”

If yes, think of:

連携 (Renkei / cooperation, coordination)

Next, ask:

“Are information, topics, events, or content connected?”

If yes, think of:

関連 (Kanren / relation, relevance)

If the sentence simply describes a broad connection or relationship, think of:

関係 (Kankei / relationship, connection)

In short:

  • Working together → 連携
  • Connected in content or context → 関連
  • General relationship or connection → 関係

Summary

関係 (Kankei), 関連 (Kanren), and 連携 (Renkei) are difficult precisely because all three involve the idea of a connection.

The key is to identify what kind of connection the sentence describes.

  • 関係: a broad relationship or connection between people or things
  • 関連: a connection involving content, information, topics, causes, or context
  • 連携: people or organizations cooperating and acting together

One particularly useful rule to remember is:

Having a 関係 does not necessarily mean there is 連携.

JLPT N2 often tests words that are close enough in meaning to make several choices look correct. Memorizing English translations alone is therefore not enough. You need practice recognizing which word fits naturally in a real sentence.

RJT (Rapid Japanese Training) helps you build that skill through practical JLPT-style questions. By repeatedly choosing between similar expressions in context, you can develop the instinct to recognize not only what is grammatically possible, but what sounds natural in Japanese.

If you often find yourself thinking, “Both answers look correct,” practice making those fine distinctions with RJT.
