変化, 発展, or 成長? Understanding Three Easily Confused JLPT N2 Words

Introduction

If you are studying for JLPT N3 or N2, you have probably encountered these three words:

  • 変化 (henka / change)
  • 発展 (hatten / development, advancement)
  • 成長 (seichō / growth)

At first, they seem very similar.

All three can describe something becoming different from what it was before. That is exactly why they are so easy to confuse.

The problem is that Japanese speakers do not choose between them simply based on the idea of "something changing."

The key question is:

What is changing, and in what way?

A sentence can be grammatically correct and still sound slightly unnatural because the noun and the type of change do not match.

Let's begin with some mistakes that Japanese learners often make.

A Common Mistake

Consider this sentence:

この10年間で、この町は大きく成長した。
Over the past ten years, this town has grown significantly.

The meaning is understandable, and 成長 (seichō / growth) is not always impossible with a town.

However, imagine that you mean the town has gained new roads, businesses, public transportation, buildings, and other infrastructure.

In that context, a more natural sentence is:

この10年間で、この町は大きく発展した。
Over the past ten years, this town has developed significantly.

Here is another common example:

インターネットの成長によって、私たちの生活は便利になった。
Because of the growth of the Internet, our lives have become more convenient.

Again, the intended meaning is clear.

But in general Japanese, this is more naturally expressed as:

インターネットの発展によって、私たちの生活は便利になった。
Thanks to the development of the Internet, our lives have become more convenient.

Why?

Because 発展 (hatten / development, advancement) is commonly used when technology, society, industry, or a system becomes more advanced and widespread.

成長 (seichō / growth) does not simply mean "becoming better."

That distinction is one of the keys to using these three words naturally.

Why Does the Wrong Word Sound Unnatural?

The confusion comes from an important similarity.

変化 (henka / change), 発展 (hatten / development), and 成長 (seichō / growth) all involve a movement away from a previous state.

However, they focus on different aspects of that movement.

変化: Something becomes different

変化 (henka / change) focuses on the fact that a state has changed.

It does not tell us whether the result is good or bad.

For example:

気候が変化している。
The climate is changing.

The word 変化 itself does not mean that the change is positive.

The climate may become warmer, colder, more unstable, or simply different.

発展: Something advances or expands

発展 (hatten / development, advancement) usually has a positive or forward-moving direction.

Something becomes more advanced, more widespread, more active, or more developed.

That is why Japanese commonly uses expressions such as:

科学が発展する。
Science advances.

経済が発展する。
The economy develops.

都市が発展する。
A city develops.

Technology, science, industry, economies, cities, and societies are especially common with 発展.

成長: Something grows over time

成長 (seichō / growth) emphasizes an increase in size, ability, strength, maturity, or capacity over time.

For example:

子どもが成長する。
A child grows.

選手として成長する。
To grow as an athlete.

会社が成長する。
A company grows.

The image behind 成長 is often that something has an internal capacity that gradually becomes larger or stronger.

So instead of asking:

"Does this thing become better?"

ask:

"How exactly is it becoming different?"

That question makes the distinction much easier.

More Natural Expressions

Let's correct the earlier examples.

Example 1: A Town

Less natural in this context:

この10年間で、この町は大きく成長した。
Over the past ten years, this town has grown significantly.

More natural:

この10年間で、この町は大きく発展した。
Over the past ten years, this town has developed significantly.

If roads, transportation, businesses, and infrastructure have expanded, 発展 is a natural choice because the town has become more developed.

However, 成長 is not always wrong.

For example:

この町は観光都市として大きく成長した。
This town has grown significantly as a tourist city.

Here, the town is being viewed almost like an organization or business whose scale and importance have increased.

This makes 成長 more natural.

Example 2: The Internet

Less natural:

インターネットの成長によって、社会は大きく変わった。
Because of the growth of the Internet, society changed significantly.

More natural:

インターネットの発展によって、社会は大きく変わった。
Because of the development of the Internet, society changed significantly.

The Internet itself became more advanced and widespread, so 発展 is appropriate.

Notice that the second half uses 変わった (kawatta / changed).

Technology "developed," while society "changed."

Different subjects lead naturally to different words.

The Basic Difference Between 変化, 発展, and 成長

変化 (henka / change)

変化 means moving from one state to another.

The important point is that it does not necessarily indicate improvement.

For example:

社会が変化する。
Society changes.

天気が変化する。
The weather changes.

人々の考え方が変化する。
People's ways of thinking change.

A useful shortcut is:

変化 = "Is it different from before?"

発展 (hatten / development, advancement)

発展 describes something expanding, becoming more advanced, or reaching a higher stage.

It is especially common with:

  • 技術 (gijutsu / technology)
  • 科学 (kagaku / science)
  • 経済 (keizai / economy)
  • 産業 (sangyō / industry)
  • 都市 (toshi / city)
  • 文化 (bunka / culture)
  • 社会 (shakai / society)

A useful shortcut is:

発展 = "Has it advanced, expanded, or become more developed?"

成長 (seichō / growth)

成長 describes something becoming bigger, stronger, more skilled, or more mature over time.

It is frequently used with:

  • 人 (hito / people)
  • 子ども (kodomo / children)
  • 動物や植物 (dōbutsu ya shokubutsu / animals and plants)
  • 能力 (nōryoku / abilities)
  • 会社 (kaisha / companies)
  • 事業 (jigyō / businesses)
  • 市場 (shijō / markets)

A useful shortcut is:

成長 = "Has its size, ability, or capacity increased over time?"

Learn the Nuance Through Examples

1. 社会は大きく変化している。

社会は大きく変化している。
Society is undergoing major changes.

変化 is natural because the focus is simply on society becoming different from before.

It can include changes in work styles, family structures, values, technology, and many other areas.

The word itself does not say whether those changes are positive or negative.

2. AI技術は急速に発展している。

AI技術は急速に発展している。
AI technology is developing rapidly.

発展 is the natural choice here.

AI technology is becoming more advanced, gaining new capabilities, and being used in more areas.

This is more than simply becoming "different."

It is advancing.

3. 子どもはさまざまな経験を通して成長する。

子どもはさまざまな経験を通して成長する。
Children grow through a variety of experiences.

成長 is natural because a child's abilities, thinking, maturity, and character develop gradually over time.

4. 気温の変化に注意してください。

気温の変化に注意してください。
Please pay attention to changes in temperature.

Here, 変化 is the right word.

Temperatures may rise or fall.

They are not "developing" or "growing" toward a more advanced state.

They are simply changing.

5. この地域は観光業によって大きく発展した。

この地域は観光業によって大きく発展した。
This area developed significantly thanks to the tourism industry.

発展 is natural because the region has become more active and developed, perhaps with more hotels, transportation, businesses, and facilities.

6. 新入社員が一年で大きく成長した。

新入社員が一年で大きく成長した。
The new employee grew a great deal in one year.

Here, 成長 refers to improvement in knowledge, experience, judgment, and professional ability.

You would not normally say:

新入社員が発展した。

because 発展 is generally not used for an individual person's personal development in this way.

7. 会社の売上が大きく成長した。

会社の売上が大きく成長した。
The company's sales grew significantly.

成長 is sometimes used this way in business contexts, especially when discussing companies, markets, sales, or business scale.

In everyday Japanese, however, you may also hear the more straightforward:

会社の売上が大きく伸びた。
The company's sales increased significantly.

This is a useful reminder that even when a word is technically possible, another expression may sound more natural depending on the context.

8. 技術の発展によって、生活スタイルも変化した。

技術の発展によって、生活スタイルも変化した。
As technology developed, people's lifestyles also changed.

This sentence shows the difference especially clearly.

技術 (technology) becomes more advanced, so we use 発展.

生活スタイル (lifestyle) becomes different from before, so we use 変化.

Learning to identify what is happening to each subject is much more useful than memorizing one English translation for each word.

How JLPT Tries to Trick You

On the JLPT, you are often not choosing between one obviously correct answer and three obviously wrong answers.

The difficult choices are usually words that are close in meaning.

For example:

この国ではIT産業が急速に( )している。
The IT industry in this country is rapidly ______.

Suppose the options include:

  • 変化
  • 発展
  • 成長

All three may look possible if you only think about their rough English meanings.

But if the context means that the IT industry is becoming more advanced, widespread, and active, then:

発展

is the most natural answer.

Now consider:

海外での経験を通して、彼は人間的に大きく( )した。
Through his experiences abroad, he ______ greatly as a person.

Here, the natural answer is:

成長

because a person's maturity and abilities have developed over time.

And:

インターネットの普及によって、人々の生活は大きく( )した。
The spread of the Internet greatly ______ people's lives.

Here:

変化

is natural because people's lives became different from before.

When you face similar words on the JLPT, do not stop at:

"These all mean something like change."

Instead, ask yourself:

  • What is the subject?
  • Is it simply becoming different?
  • Is it advancing or becoming more developed?
  • Is its size, ability, or capacity gradually increasing?

Those questions can help you eliminate tempting wrong answers.

The same skill is important in reading comprehension.

For example:

経済の発展
economic development

suggests expansion or progress in the economy.

But:

社会の変化
social change

does not necessarily imply improvement.

That small difference can affect how you understand an entire paragraph.

Summary

変化, 発展, and 成長 all involve something becoming different from before, but their focus is different.

  • 変化 (henka / change): A state becomes different. The direction may be positive or negative.
  • 発展 (hatten / development): Something expands, advances, or reaches a more developed stage.
  • 成長 (seichō / growth): Something increases in size, ability, strength, or maturity over time.

When you are unsure which word to choose, do not ask only:

"Did it improve?"

Instead, ask:

"What changed, and how did it change?"

That way of thinking is especially useful for JLPT N2, where the hardest vocabulary questions often contain several options that are close in meaning.

Knowing a definition is only the first step. To choose the right word quickly, you need practice recognizing which expression fits a real sentence.

RJT (Rapid Japanese Training) is designed to help you build exactly that skill through practical JLPT-style questions. If you often understand every option but still hesitate between the final two choices, practice making those distinctions under real question conditions.
