Accelerate Your N3/N2 Progress: The "Weakness Log" Template to Streamline Your Review

People whose scores improve quickly are not simply better at reviewing.
They are better at narrowing down exactly what they need to review.

Many learners just redo the questions they got wrong and stop there. But what really matters is building up information about why those mistakes happened.

Four items your weakness log needs

If you make the log too complicated, you will not keep using it.
These four items are enough.

  • Date
  • Category (Vocabulary / Grammar Patterns / Reading / Listening)
  • Reason for the mistake (for example: connector mistake / lack of vocabulary / skipped part of the text / missed part of the audio)
  • Next action (for example: solve 10 more questions of the same grammar type)

A notebook is fine. A memo app on your phone is also fine. The goal is simply to make your own mistake patterns visible at a glance.

Improve accuracy with a weekly “study review”

At the end of the week, spend just five minutes looking over your log.

You will probably start noticing patterns such as, “I made five connector-related mistakes this week,” or “I lost track of the subject in reading three times in a row.” Those repeated patterns are your real weak points, and they are exactly what you should focus on fixing the following week.

Summary: once your weak points become visible, your time increases on its own

When it becomes clear what you should focus on, you stop wasting time wondering which materials to use or what order to study in. As a result, your actual study efficiency rises dramatically.

Rapid Japanese’s free 100-question training is a great way to expose your mistakes. Why not start by spending just 10 focused minutes solving questions and then recording the reasons for your mistakes in your log?
