How to use this page
This page is a sub-hub for learning cause and reason expressions in detail.
To see the bigger picture including results, changes, and purposes, start with JLPT Cause, Reason, and Result Expressions: A Learning Roadmap.
This page focuses on expressions that explain reasons and causes, such as 「から」, 「ので」, 「ため」, 「おかげで」, and 「せいで」.
Cause and reason expressions in Japanese are not all interchangeable. In JLPT questions, the key is not only “why,” but also whether the result is good or bad, whether the tone is casual or formal, and whether the sentence expresses a reason, a purpose, or a cause.
から is a basic reason marker and is easy to use in conversation. It often sounds direct and can express the speaker’s own judgment. ので is softer and often sounds more objective.
ため is more formal and is common in reading passages, explanations, and news-style writing. However, ために can also express purpose, so you need to distinguish “reason” from “purpose.”
おかげで is used when the cause leads to a good result. せいで is used when the cause leads to a bad result. Both show cause, but the speaker’s evaluation is opposite.
によって can express cause, method, or condition depending on context. When it expresses cause, it often sounds formal and objective.
When choosing a reason expression, check these points: Is the sentence casual or formal? Is the result good or bad? Is it a reason or a purpose?
