The biggest reason why 聴解 (listening) scores do not become stable is that many learners only start thinking about what they should listen for after the audio begins.
In fact, 先読み (previewing) is not a talent. It is simply a routine task that becomes effective when you repeat the same steps every time.
Here is a template that helps your brain switch into 聴解 (listening) mode in just 10 seconds.
A 10-Second 先読み (previewing) Template
In the short time before the question is read aloud, go through the following four steps mechanically.
1. Check the 動詞 (verbs) in the answer choices
First, focus on the actions.
This helps you quickly identify what kind of topic or situation the audio will be about.
2. Classify the category
Ask yourself which type of information is most likely to be tested: 「人」(person), 「場所」(place), 「時間」(time), or 「理由」(reason).
3. Predict contrast signals
Prepare yourself for keywords that may change the direction of the conversation, such as 「しかし」(however), 「でも」(but), 「実は」(actually), and 「ただ」(however / though).
4. Predict the conclusion
Try to imagine the goal of the conversation.
For example, is it a conversation in which someone makes a final decision, or one in which someone asks another person for something?
Just Adding 先読み (previewing) Reduces Missed Information
Confusion in 聴解 (listening) often happens because learners are not ready to “wait for” important information.
Simply by using this template, the important parts of the audio will start to stand out more clearly.
