Japanese has several ways to say that someone should not do something. Two common expressions are 「べきではない」 and 「てはいけない」.

They may look similar, but their nuance is different.

The main difference is this: 「てはいけない」 expresses a rule or strong prohibition, while 「べきではない」 expresses advice, judgment, or criticism.

「てはいけない」 means a strong prohibition

「てはいけない」 is used when something is not allowed because of a rule, law, instruction, or safety reason.

Examples:
試験中にスマホを見てはいけません。
You must not look at your phone during the exam.

この部屋では写真を撮ってはいけません。
You must not take photos in this room.

薬を飲んだ後、車を運転してはいけません。
You must not drive after taking medicine.

This expression sounds clear and direct. It tells the listener that the action is not permitted.

「べきではない」 means “should not”

「べきではない」 is used when the speaker thinks an action is not right, not appropriate, or not recommended.

Examples:
人の失敗を笑うべきではありません。
You should not laugh at other people’s mistakes.

大切な決定を急いで決めるべきではありません。
You should not make an important decision too quickly.

相手の事情を知らずに批判するべきではありません。
You should not criticize someone without knowing their situation.

This expression is less like a rule and more like a judgment or advice.

Key difference

「てはいけない」 is based on an outside rule.
「べきではない」 is based on the speaker’s judgment.

For example, 「ここでタバコを吸ってはいけません」 means smoking here is prohibited by a rule.
「人の前でタバコを吸うべきではありません」 means the speaker thinks smoking in front of others is not considerate.

If the sentence talks about rules, laws, instructions, safety, or prohibition, 「てはいけない」 is often natural.
If the sentence talks about manners, morality, judgment, or advice, 「べきではない」 is often better.
